With the current cost of living crisis, people are struggling with soaring costs. Baking is a luxury, and it shouldn’t be. It should be accessible to all. This is why I have added this Budget Baking section to A Spoonful of Vanilla.
The cost of each recipe is including all ingredients. So, for example, if a recipe calls for 300g of self-raising flour, in supermarkets this can only be bought in bags of 1.5kg so I have used the price of the 1.5kg bag.
The same with unsalted butter or baking spread. If a recipe calls for 200g most unsalted butter comes in blocks of 250g and baking spread 500g so I have used the price of the full tub. I thought this was the best way as you can’t go to a supermarket and only buy 200g of an ingredient you need to buy the full 250g or 500g.
I also used a midrange supermarket to price the items. If you are shopping in a budget supermarket like Lidl or Aldi you might find that the ingredients are cheaper. If you are shopping in a more expensive supermarket, then the ingredients will be more expensive.
Where possible, I have also used budget options rather than branded ones. So, for example, if a recipe calls for peanut butter, I have used a supermarket’s own brand option rather than a big brand. The same with chocolate I have used supermarket’s own 30p chocolate rather than branded. You of course can use big brands if you prefer but just remember this is obviously going to cost more.
The costs don’t include the prices of cake tins, or any moulds needed it is simply just the ingredients.
I hope this budget baking section helps and allows you to bake and find recipes within your budget.
