Christmas Baking

We’re officially more than halfway through November and that can only mean one thing…it’s time to start Christmas Baking.

Christmas baking is my absolute favourite time of the year. There are just so many different flavour combinations and fun decorating ideas. Baking with cinnamon in the summer just seems so wrong, but baking with cinnamon in the winter, when it is dark outside and your kitchen smells incredible is just perfect.

I do have to say though there is no cinnamon in this recipe, but fear not! There will be plenty of cinnamon bakes coming in the next few weeks.

Nutella Recipes

I don’t have a lot of Nutella recipes on my blog. In fact, apart from this one I only have one other and that is my Nutella Ice Cream. I am definitely failing on the Nutella front, but who knows, 2024 is a new year and maybe the year of Nutella.

Puff Pastry

So, for this recipe, I did use shop-bought ready-to-roll puff pastry and I do not regret it. It is just so much easier than making your own (although you can make your own if you want.) It makes the recipe easier and quicker though to use shop-bought.

I wouldn’t recommend using any other kind of pastry. The puff pastry gives the Christmas Tree a wonderful texture and you won’t get that with a shortcrust pastry.

Baking

The Nutella Christmas Tree needs to bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until it is golden brown in colour.

It can be eaten straight from the oven just leave it to cool for a few minutes because it will of course be really really hot. It can also be eaten cold.

Budget Baking

Christmas is such an expensive time of the year for a lot of families. The cost of living crisis putting more pressure on people than ever and people having to give up their hobbies such as baking. I am trying to make baking as accessible and as inexpensive as possible in the hope that some families may be able to afford to create something delicious this Christmas.

If you would like to bake but are on a budget head over to my Budget Baking section and find recipes to suit your budget.

Alternatives

Why not replace the Nutella with another kind of spread? You could use Biscoff, Cadbury or a Chocolate Orange spread.

Ingredients

For the Nutella Christmas Tree

  • 2 sheets of Puff Pastry
  • 300 g Nutella
  • 1 Large Egg (beaten)
  • Icing Sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

To Make the Nutella Christmas Tree

  • Preheat your oven to 180C/160C Fan and line your oven tray with baking parchment.
  • Cut both sheets of pastry into large triangles. Leave the offcuts to one side.
  • Lay one of the triangles on your oven tray and spread over the Nutella.
  • Lay the second triangle on top of the first.
  • Cut the branches by cutting horizontally into both sides of the Nutella Christmas Tree. The branches should be approximately 1 inch apart. Remember and leave around 1 inch in the centre of the tree so that it stays connected.
  • Twist each branch to create a swirl in the pastry.
  • Using a star cutter, cut stars from the offcuts of the pastry. Add one to the top of the tree and add the remaining trees to the centre of the tree.
  • Brush the exposed pastry with your beaten egg.
  • Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown in colour.
  • Leave to cool before dusting with icing sugar.

Notes

  • This Nutella Christmas Tree is best on the day of baking but will last in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • You can use any kind of spread in the centre. This recipe will work perfectly with Biscoff or another chocolate spread.
